Over 50 professional male athletes will head to the capital city of Denmark to battle it out for the final slot to the 2025 IRONMAN World Championship triathlon in Nice in September.
Local Mathias Lyngsø Petersen will be wearing bib number one. Lyngsø Petersen has already secured his ticket to Nice following a third-place finish at Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote triathlon, but upon finding out Qatar Airways IRONMAN Copenhagen would be a professional male race he took to Instagram to say: ‘I knew I had to support it by being there’. Lyngsø Petersen comes off his first ever IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon win in Westfriesland a few weeks ago.
Finn Große-Freese (DEU), who is in his third year as a professional athlete will provide stiff competition. The young German had a career defining performance earlier this year when he took the win at IRONMAN Kaernten-Klagenfurt triathlon.
Joe Skipper (GBR) is also back to IRONMAN racing after a successful early season race at ANZCO Foods IRONMAN New Zealand triathlon, where he came second and Rasmus Svenningson (SWE) will race his first IRONMAN triathlon of the year after illness struck him out of toeing the line at ISUZU IRONNAN South Africa African Championship triathlon back in April.
Other names likely to play a part in the dynamics of the race include Thor Bendix Maden (DNK), Cody Beals (CAN) and Michael Weiss (AUT) amongst others.
IRONMAN Copenhagen triathlon is one of a few triathlon races that take place in a capital city and offers athletes the perfect city break destination for friends and family alike. Athletes start their journey in the calm waters of Amager Beach lagoon before taking on a rolling but scenic bike course which passes the idyllic “Danish Riviera” and into the beautiful landscapes of North Zealand. On the run, athletes will pass landmarks such as the Opera House, Amalienborg Palace, Nyhavn, and the beloved Little Mermaid statue, before finishing right in front of the the Christiansborg Palace. Fun fact; the King Frederik of Denmark raced at the inaugural IRONMAN Copenhagen in August 2013 (when he was Crown Prince), clocking an impressive time of 10:45:32.?
