The IRONMAN South American Championship drew strong fields to the beautiful region of Mar del Plata, Argentina. With the title—and Kona qualification—on the line before the season winds down, race day brought out some strong performances. Matt Chrabot (USA) led out of the water with a group of athletes very close together, partly due to the shortened swim (1.2 miles) because of low temperatures. Paulo Maciel (BRA) was at or near the front of the race throughout much of the swim and bike portions of the race in Colombia. The Brazilian spotted Aussie Tim Rea (AUS) a 1:20 ahead starting out on the run and was unable to close the deficit in the first of the two laps of the run. The tide changed in the final 10.5 km's, as Maciel started to reel in the leader and caught Rea with 6 km's remaining to take the win. more
