70.3 European Championship Tallinn Pro Preview

Friday 23 August 2024
The IRONMAN Pro Seriesremainsin Europe for its next stop, as nearly 100 professional triathletes are expected at the IRONMAN® 70.3® European Championship Tallinn, Estonia triathlon on Sunday 25 August 2024.  As one of the final stops on the circuit before the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship® races in Nice (women) and Kailua-Kona (men), excitement is building as athletes look to rack up all-important IRONMAN Pro Series points.

As well as the title of IRONMAN 70.3 European Champion, athletes will be competing for a total prize purse of $75,000 with the male and female professional winner taking home $12,000 each, and a maximum of 2,500 IRONMAN Pro Series points. The race will be broadcast for free across multiple platforms for global viewers including?proseries.ironman.com, Outside TV, DAZN, L’Équipe in France, and YouTube among others.?

Wearing bib number one in the men’s professional field, is reigning IRONMAN 70.3 European Champion, Pieter Heemeryck (BEL), who will be making his IRONMAN Pro Series debut. This will be Heermeryck’s first IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon of the year, following a successful 2023 which saw him take the win at both IRONMAN® Portugal-Cascais and IRONMAN 70.3 Knokke-Heist triathlons.

Heemeryck will be challenged by Paul Schuster (DEU) and Robert Kallin (SWE) who currently sit in 11th and 12th respectively in the IRONMAN Pro Series, with Schuster also due to race at Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt triathlon this coming weekend. Other professional men due to toe the line include Cameron Wurf (AUS), Antony Costes (FRA), Nicholas Quenet (ZAF) amongst others.

In the women’s professional field, Maja Stage Nielsen (DNK) will be wearing bib number one. Stage Nielsen currently sits in 4th place in the standings with a total of 11,025 points, thanks to three top 10 finishes in IRONMAN Pro Series races so far, including a 2nd place finish at the IRONMAN European Championship Hamburg race. Kat Matthews (GBR) will likely be the biggest threat to the women’s professional field, with two IRONMAN Pro Series victories under her belt already (IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz and Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas triathlons).

She will undoubtedly be challenged by fellow Brit, Fenella Langridge, currently 9th in the standings who has enjoyed three top 10 finishes in IRONMAN Pro Series races so far. Els Visser (NLD) also comes in hot with a great IRONMAN Pro Series season unfolding, including a 2nd place at IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz and 5th at IRONMAN European Championship Hamburg races. Additional challengers include Tamara Jewett (CAN), Lauren Brandon (USA), and Penny Slater (AUS), amongst others.

Alongside the professional athletes, there will be nearly 2,000 age-groupers battling it out to earn age-group qualifying slots for the 2025 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon in Marbella, Spain.

All athletes will take on a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim around the Lake of Harku, before embarking on the two-loop 56-mile (90km) scenic bike course which boasts a mix of city and countryside through the southern villages of Tallinn. The 13.1-mile (21.1km) two lap run course promises to be flat and fast as athletes run along Tallinn Bay and Stroomi beach, finishing in front of the Rocca al Mare Shopping Centre to the roar of spectators.

Taking place the day before will be the IRONMAN Tallinn triathlon which is an age-group only race, and expects to welcome nearly 1,000 athletes. It will also be the first race of the year to offer 2025 IRONMAN World Championship triathlons in Nice (men) and Kailua-Kona (women) qualifying slots.
