CHALLENGE Family Announce Challenge Shanghai China

Wednesday 11 March 2026

The global triathlon calendar is set to expand onto the East China seafront as Challenge Family announces Challenge Shanghai on 24-25 October 2026.

The new race represents a strategic milestone for the global series, selecting a destination widely recognized as a “National Sports and Leisure Sanctuary”. For the first time, elite international athletes will converge on Fengxian District to race along Shanghai’s southern coastline, experiencing a course designed to combine speed, natural beauty and world-class infrastructure.

“For us, Challenge Shanghai represents everything that makes our global series unique – discovering extraordinary locations and creating unforgettable race experiences for athletes,” said Challenge Family CEO, Jort Vlam. “Haiwan Town and Fengxian District offer something truly special: a spectacular coastal environment that most people would never expect to find in a megacity like Shanghai. When you combine that with outstanding infrastructure and an incredibly passionate local organising team, you have all the ingredients for a world-class race. We are excited to bring the bring athletes from around the world to this unique part of China.”

Local officials note the partnership highlights Fengxian District’s transformation through its “Outdoor Sports Paradise” initiative. Over the past several years, the district has developed more than 100 kilometres of professional-grade trails and greenways, designed to host large-scale international endurance events while promoting sustainable recreation and tourism.

“This significant move goes far beyond holding an international race; it creates a high-profile global platform to fully present the remarkable green development and urban transformation achievements of Fengxian District,” said Challenge Shanghai spokesperson, Weber Liao. “As a world-renowned triathlon event, Challenge Shanghai brings top-level racing experience to the heart of Shanghai’s coastal area, perfectly integrating competitive sports with ecological leisure.”

A Course Designed for Speed and Scenic Beauty
Challenge Shanghai offers athletes a rare “seafront racing” experience in one of the world’s largest metropolitan regions.

The 1.9km swim course takes place in the calm waters of Bainiao Lake, the largest artificial lake in Shanghai’s park system.

The 90km bike course connects three distinctive zones of Haiwan Town - western sports vitality, central ecological leisure and eastern sports trends - weaving through the stunning southern Shanghai coastline, Luhua Wetland Park, and the vibrant Hainong Highway district.

The 21km run course passes through key landmarks including Meiyuan, Zhuyuan, Bird Island and Bainiao Lake, immersing athletes in the forest park’s natural “oxygen bar” environment.

A World-Class Racing Experience in a Global Metropolis
More than a competitive sporting event, Challenge Shanghai combines elite triathlon racing with the relaxing atmosphere of a pristine coastal ecological sanctuary. Athletes will find a fast and scenic course designed for performance, while visitors and families can enjoy a weekend of sport, leisure and outdoor activities in Haiwan National Forest Park and nearby central Shanghai.

The result is a unique metropolitan racing experience where Shanghai’s coastal district is set to emerge as one of the newest must-race destinations on the global triathlon calendar.

Challenge Shanghai will take place on 24-25 October 2026 with races over the sprint, standard and middle distances and is a qualifying race for The Championship in Šamorín, Slovakia. For further information and entries, visit www.challenge-shanghai.com
