IRONMAN today announced that Sharm El-Sheikh, one of Egypt’s most renowned tourism destinations, will join the global calendar as the newest addition to the 2026 IRONMAN® 70.3® triathlon series.
Located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula and stretching along the Red Sea coastline, Sharm El-Sheikh is internationally recognised for its year-round warm climate, vibrant atmosphere, and world-class coral reef systems. The surrounding reefs form part of the Red Sea’s unique marine ecosystem, home to hundreds of coral species and diverse marine life, making the destination a global hub for diving and snorkelling, alongside its lively traditional markets and modern resort offerings. With average temperatures ranging from 28° to 33°, this race will act as a perfect season-closer for many athletes who will no doubt take a well-deserved holiday post-race to enjoy the abundance of tourist activities, hotels, and restaurants that are on the doorstep.
The IRONMAN 70.3 Sharm El-Sheikh triathlon will be the second IRONMAN branded race to take place in the country, with the IRONMAN 70.3 Egypt triathlon taking place from 2021-2023 in the Sahl Hasheesh region. The race also marks the second IRONMAN 70.3 race in North Africa, with the IRONMAN 70.3 Agadir triathlon taking place the week after.
The hub of the race will be The Jaz Hotel, which will host the athlete village and check-in, all conveniently located close to many of the resort hotels.
Athletes hoping for a swim personal best can look forward to the unique opportunity to swim in the buoyant Red Sea as they take on the single-looped course starting from Naama Bay. The one-loop 90 km bike course takes athletes along the Dahab Road - a desert highway framed by dramatic mountain backdrops, offering long, straight stretches perfect for settling into the aerobars and finding a steady rhythm. With gradual climbs and fast, flowing descents, all set against the striking mountain scenery, this course delivers a true test of endurance and strength. Finally, athletes will complete the 21.2km run course through urban areas and coastal roads, finishing by the sea.
Thomas Veje Olsen, IRONMAN?Europe, Middle East and Africa Managing Director commented: “We are delighted to return to Egypt and continue supporting our athletes across the region. The course offers mesmerising views and ideal racing conditions in October, and we believe this event will appeal strongly to families looking to combine racing with a memorable holiday experience.”
Hassan Khalifa, IRONMAN 70.3 Sharm El-Sheikh Race Director said: “We are very excited to welcome athletes from all over the world and show them what we have to offer here as a race destination. Beyond race day, Egypt offers an experience unlike anywhere else in the world. Sharm El Sheikh is a perfect destination for athletes and families, with world-class scuba diving and snorkelling, desert bike rides, beach activities, and countless outdoor adventures. Beyond the race location, visitors can travel to Cairo to witness the timeless wonders of the Great Pyramids of Giza and explore the Grand Egyptian Museum. Most importantly, athletes will experience the warmth of Egyptian hospitality, a culture built on welcoming guests, sharing stories, and celebrating moments together. We can’t wait to host everyone.”
