A rainy day in the Adirondack Mountains couldn’t curtail another thrilling edition of the Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon and the 13th race in the 2025 IRONMAN Pro Series™ on Sunday. Matthew Marquardt (USA) would storm back to take the overall win in a time of 7:50:08 setting a new course best on the legendry Olympic Oval while also winning his second full-distance IRONMAN of the year. In the women’s race, Norway’s Solveig Løvseth would come from behind in to claim her first full-distance IRONMAN win, setting a new course best time of 8:43:29, and earn her second IRONMAN Pro Series victory of the year.
In the male professional race, Thomas Gordon (USA) would exit the clear waters of Mirror Lake first in a blazing fast time of 48:51. Gordon would be followed by a group of three that included Andrew Horsfall-Turner (GBR), Matt Schafer (USA), and Jason West (USA), who was making his full-distance IRONMAN debut in Lake Placid.
Despite cramping shortly after exiting the swim, Marquardt quickly work his way into contention early in the bike along with Kristain Høgenhaug (DNK), Robert Kallin (SWE), Leon Chevalier (FRA), Bradley Weiss (ZAF) and Trevor Foley (USA) who overcame a 6-minute deficit out of the water to work his way to the front of the group. Marquardt would take the lead into T2, followed by Høgenhaug and Foley a minute back.
Showcasing his signature run pedigree, Foley would take the lead early on in the final leg keeping himself just out of striking distance of Marquardt and Høgenhaug. However, in a reversal of roles from the 2024 Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid, Marquardt would provide a stunning surge in the 18th mile to overtake a fading Foley to earn an impressive win and break Foley’s course best time of 7:55:23 set last year by almost five minutes. A soaring Høgenhaug would overtake Foley as well to earn second in a time of 7:56:16, while Foley remained resilient to claim the third spot on the podium in a time of 7:57:13.
“All the guys, Trevor (Foley), Kristain (Høgenhaug), Robert (Kallin), and Leon (Chevalier) are all some of the top cyclists in the sport right now,” Marquardt said on the finish line. “We had all five of us together at one period during the bike. Whether they were initially attacking or not, it was fireworks, after fireworks, after fireworks. The power was just incredibly high. It was such a high intensity I wasn’t sure I could put together a marathon after that. That was a world championship level bike ride. I really proud of the fitness I have right now.”
In the women’s race, Rebecca Clarke (NZL) and Holly Lawrence (GBR), in her debut full-distance IRONMAN performance, shot off the front to lead early the swim. Following behind was a pack of strong challengers that included Marta Sanchez (ESP), Lotte Wilms (NLD), Lisa Perterer (AUT) and Regan Hollioake (AUS). Clarke would exit the water first and finish the 2.4-mile course in an impressive 50.51, only a matter of seconds ahead of Lawrence.
While Lawrence wasted no time putting down a blistering pace to take an early lead, the group of her, Perterer, and Sanchez would all jostle for position throughout the 112-mile course throughout the Adirondacks. Perterer and Sanchez would enter T2 first, however, all eyes were on Solveig Løvseth who had crept into the picture and overtaken Lawrence in the final miles of the bike.
Perterer moved past Sanchez to take a firm grip on lead within the first eight miles. With the likes of top talent Jackie Hering (USL), Tamara Jewett (CAN) and 2024 champion Danielle Lewis (USA) all starting to fall further back, Løvseth got to work and eventually running herself into second by the halfway point. Løvseth would take over the lead from Perterer with eight miles to go and continue to grow her gap. The Norwegian kept her foot on the gas and would cross the finish line with a course best 2:46:49 marathon (previously 2:52:13 set by Danielle Lewis last year) to earn her first full-distance IRONMAN victory. Perterer would follow in second finishing in 8:46:50, while Sanchez would round out the podium with a 8:53:07.
“I think it was about be patience, really” Løvseth stated on the finish line. “What I like about the IRONMAN distance is that it is a long day. You don’t have to stress too much. I lost some time in the beginning. I was expecting to gain some time on the bike, which I didn’t. But it was all about continuing to believe that I could win. I went out hot on the run and was trying to keep it all together. Really proud that I made it work in the end.”
