IRONMAN & 70.3 Triathlons Selling Out Across Canada & USA

Monday 10 March 2025

Excitement for IRONMAN® and IRONMAN 70.3® racing in Canada and the U.S. is continuing to grow for 2025 events, as multiple races have already sold out with a number of additional events likely to reach sell-out status in the coming months.

Events for 2025 such as the IRONMAN 70.3 Mont-Tremblant, IRONMAN 70.3 Oregon and IRONMAN Canada-Ottawa triathlons proved to be popular destinations selling out quickly when they opened in 2024. The demand has continued with early year sell outs for the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas, Intermountain Health IRONMAN 70.3 St. George, IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga, IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford-Illinois and IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside triathlons.

In addition, the window is closing quickly for athletes to get spots to the Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid, IRONMAN 70.3 Texas, Visit Panama City IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast, IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria, IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman and IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman triathlons.

In 2024, the IRONMAN Lake Placid event was one of the fastest IRONMAN races to sell out and is again filling up quickly with over 90% of slots sold out. The IRONMAN 70.3 Texas and Visit Panama City IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast triathlons are hovering around 85% sold out while the IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria, IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman, and IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman events sit at over 80% sold out.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman triathlon in the Finger Lakes region of New York State is a clear standout on the circuit as it was recently named Best Overall Event Satisfaction and Best Bike Course for the global 2024 IRONMAN Athletes’ Choice Awards as voted on by the athletes in 2024. Results for the 2024 Global Athletes’ Choice Awards were gathered from post event surveys sent to all athletes who completed an IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 race.

“We are thrilled to see so many IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races in the region sold out this early into the year,” Keats McGonigal, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, North America. “We take a lot of pride in delivering life changing experiences and are privileged to have so many athletes coming to our races to realize their dreams and cross our finish lines. We look forward to celebrating with all our athletes in 2025.”

With the addition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Rockford-Illinois race, the return of IRONMAN 70.3 Boise event and the IRONMAN Canada triathlon’s move to Ottawa, the 2025 season is already shaping up to be an exciting one with vibrant new venues and exciting race locations for athletes to experience.

Data and Trends
The sell outs for 2025 events have shown an increasing interest in IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 racing across Canada and the U.S. with more events selling out faster and earlier in the year than the last couple years. The demand for racing also highlights the unique and unforgettable destinations that the portfolio of Canadian and U.S. events have to offer.

Digging into recent data indicates a growing popularity of the sport amongst younger athletes, with participation figures for 18–35 year-olds across North America at an all-time high. When looking across Canadian and U.S. events, 2024 saw an 32% increase in 18-35 year-olds registering for long-distance IRONMAN events. Additionally, female participation in long-distance IRONMAN events was highlighted by a 10% increase.

Following a decline in travel for races post-pandemic, data has also shown that the desire for intracontinental travelling has returned, with the states of California, Texas, New York, and Florida making up the largest contingent of traveling athletes for North American events, with an overall increase of 15% from 2003 to 2004 in destination race traveling.

In 2024, over 50,000 athletes crossed their very first IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon finish line in Canada or the U.S., marking a 4% year-on-year increase. Washington and Indiana saw the greatest overall growth in athletes, with 35% and 32% year-on-year increase, respectively.

With new destinations and events in Canada, Northwest U.S. and Illinois in 2025, significant growth has now also been seen in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, Canada, and in the U.S. State of Illinois, specifically in the Chicago area.
