70.3 Rio de Janeiro BRA Debuts New Course in 2023

Tuesday 20 September 2022

It was announced today that the Itaú BBA IRONMAN® 70.3® Rio de Janeiro event scheduled for July 9, 2023, will debut a new race course in the heart of “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Wonderful City). There will be 1,900 meters (1.2 miles) of swimming in the refreshing waters of Copacabana, 90 kilometers (56 miles) of cycling through Avenida Atlântica, a flatter 21 kilometers (13.1 miles) half-marathon along the Aterro do Flamengo and the finish line at the beautiful Marina da Glória. The 2023 Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro triathlon will open general registration on Sept. 22 at www.ironman.com/im703-rio-de-janeiro.

After six successful editions in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro, triathletes will be able to experience new emotions and challenges on the streets of the state capital. Besides the privileged view of famous sceneries such as the Sugar Loaf, Christ the Redeemer, and the Botafogo bay, another great benefit of the new route is the opportunity to be closer to the local fans.

“It is important to highlight that the entire race will be held on the Rio 2016 Olympic course, ensuring a high degree of safety and performance optimization for the athletes. It will certainly be an unforgettable experience for all participants,” says Carlos Galvão, CEO of Unlimited Sports, the event organizer.

The finish line and IRONMAN Village will be based inside the Marina da Gloria, in a space for events well known locally for its beauty and structure. Family, friends, and spectators will have a high-standard environment to get to know the race and cheer on the arrival of the athletes.

The last edition of the race, held in July 2022, attracted over 1,200 athletes from 23 countries. With a more strategic location, the Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro has everything to be considered one of the main events in the IRONMAN Americas triathlon calendar.

The 2023 edition of the Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro triathlon will qualify 30 athletes for the 2024 VinFast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship triathlon, to be held in Taupo, Zealand.

General registration for the IRONMAN 70.3 Rio de Janeiro will open at 3:00 p.m. (BRT) on September 22 at www.ironman.com/im703-rio-de-janeiro. Athletes' questions can be directed to contato@unlimitedsports.com.br.
