This past Sunday, December 1st, the Aysén Region witnessed a one-of-a-kind sports spectacle: the fifth edition of Patagonman, an event that not only crowned world-class athletes but also reaffirmed its status as the most extreme triathlon in the world.
With participants from 45 countries, Patagonman 2024 delivered a day filled with excitement, endurance, and a profound connection to nature. Athletes braved the icy 12.2°C waters of the Aysén Fjord, cycled through the epic landscapes of the Carretera Austral, and ran toward General Carrera Lake, ringing the iconic bell that symbolizes the end of a transformative experience.
Out of 300 registered competitors, 182 boarded the ferry, and 159 reached the finish line. The day was marked by challenging currents during the swim, cold and windy conditions on the bike course, and a spectacularly sunny run. The cycling route featured additional challenges, including sections of gravel and a river crossing during the run segment. The infamous Aysén winds played a starring role as well.
Notable Results:
- Men's Champion: Josiah Middaugh (USA) - 09:52:35
- Women's Champion: Caroline Livesay (UK) - 11:02:54
Caroline's victory was especially remarkable, as she became the first athlete to win the race twice, a historic achievement in Patagonman.
Beyond the athletic success, the event had a significant impact on the local community and regional tourism, attracting over 800 visitors who are expected to stay in Aysén for at least a week, generating over $2 million in revenue.
