Last year’s runner-up George Goodwin stormed to the win at IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire. He came off the bike only a few meters behind leader Will Clarke, ready to take control immediately. The 22-year old Brit finally celebrated his first IRONMAN 70.3 victory in 3:57:26 in front of Will Clarke only two weeks after placing second up at the IRONMAN South American Championship. Defending champion Elliot Smales rounded out the podium.
Lucy Charles-Barclay was the woman to watch. Everyone expected the 25-year-old to be in the lead after the swim, which she did in style by clocking the fastest swim split overall. The IRONMAN South African Championship winner dominated the bike as well before she embarked onto the run course with a lead of four minutes. She didn’t give away anymore and took a home win in 4:22:30.
