Champs return to 70.3 Puerto Rico

Thursday 10 April 2014
Both Helle Frederiksen & Andrew Starykowicz are returning to the start line at Condado Lagoon for the 2014 Puerto Rico 70.3 this coming weekend. This years event features a significantly smaller professional field than previous years with just 11 men and 5 females to which Helle Frederiksen responded “Disappointing to see a race with a history like #IM703PR's negatively effected by event saturation. Never the less, same work required”

Andrew Starykowicz commented “Looking forward to defending @ironmanpr & having some #mofongo! Guaranteed to be fast & hot with Ben Collins, Andi Boecherer pushing the bike”

While Ben Collins was approaching the race from a different perspective saying “Caribbean food is my main motivation for racing in the islands”

Responding to Starykowicz Andi Boecherer replied “looking forward to meeting you there. By the way it is going to be a swim bike AND run event”

Those competing this weekend will be enjoy a spectacular course that covers landmarks of historical significance to the Island. The day starts with a "U" shaped point-to-point swim located in the calm, protected waters of the Condado Lagoon. As competitors head to the swim exit at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, they will be guided under the Dos Hermanos Bridge that will be lined with encouraging spectators.

The transition is set up in the Sixto Escobar Stadium, which is about 400 yards from the swim exit. Most of the bike course covers the northern part of the island and incudes beachfront views, some challenging hills and typically strong winds that provide the biggest challenge on the bike.

The two-lap, 13.1-mile run course will stage the beauty and history of the oldest city flying the American flag, and is the true highlight of the race. The run makes it way towards Old San Juan, offers outstanding views of the Atlantic Ocean and the spectacular 250 year-old Spanish Forts of San Cristobal and San Felipe Del Morro and centuries-old cobblestoned streets.
