Frankfurt Favorites: Frederik Van Lierde

Saturday 05 July 2014
The 2013 IRONMAN world champion faces some stiff competition at the IRONMAN European Championship on Sunday. After winning three consecutive IRONMAN France titles, Frederik Van Lierde has a new early summer race venue on his calendar in 2014, one that will see him face some stiff competition.

Van Lierde, 35, admits it was a busy winter thanks to his win in Kona last October, thanks to lots of interest from the media and more sponsorship demands. The easy-going Belgian takes it all in stride, though, admitting it's a "problem" he's dreamed of having all his life.

After a fourth place finish at the Abu Dhabi International triathlon in March, Van Lierde says he feels like he's been able to truly focus on his training over the last few months. He's coming off a three week training camp at high altitude in France, where he says he was finally able to have some time out of the limelight to focus on his training.
