Tim Rea (AUS) found himself facing a three minute deficit heading out on the run to Felipe Van de Wyngard (CHL) and 21 km's to attempt to catch the front runner. It would take the Aussie 16 kilometers to complete the task as Rea bridged the gap to the leader to make the pass stick as he went on to win by a 1:19 minutes.
Sarah Piampiano (USA) exited the water in fourth, close to four minutes back of the swim leader. Punching out a blazing bike split that was over 13 minutes faster than anyone else in the field, Piampiano was well positioned for a comfortable win.
