Paulo Maciel (BRA) was at or near the front of the race throughout much of the swim and bike portions of the race in Colombia. The Brazilian spotted Aussie Tim Rea (AUS) a 1:20 ahead starting out on the run and was unable to close the deficit in the first of the two laps of the run. The tide changed in the final 10.5 km's, as Maciel started to reel in the leader and caught Rea with 6 km's remaining to take the win.
Lauren Goss (USA) made easy work of the women's field in Cartagena, posting the fastest swim, bike a run splits on the day to take the victory by a winning margin of 7:42.
